Fiji is a beautiful island located in the south pacific, about 2000km’s North-East of New Zealand. The sub-tropical island is warm and temperate nearly all year round. It’s usually quite hot between November and April and it usually cools down between May and October. So if you are not a big fan of hot sticky climates then it’s best to visit there during the middle of the year.

To get into the country you are not required to obtain a visa if you are from any of the Commonwealth countries, USA, Japan or the EU if you plan to stay there for less than 30 days. You are required to have a passport that needs to be valid for at least six months after you plan to leave and you are required to purchase a return ticket before you go there.

Most of the Fijians speak English so you should be able to get by if you can speak the language yourself. As a tradition most of the locals are bilingual and can speak Fijian as well, and it is almost a dialect of Hindi and is in fact referred to as Fiji Hindi.

The food in Fiji is considered a multi-ethnic experience. There are influences from Japan, India, China, Australia and New Zealand. Although these influences do appear to be from the pacific, you can still find a few restaurants that offer the usual Italian, French and Mediterranean cuisine. Being an island their specialty dishes are mainly seafood and on any one of the regular hotels there you can experience a themed BBQ evening called a Magiti or a Fijian Feast. You can experience food being cooked in a Lovo. An underground oven that consists of heated rocks that are used to cook all the food that has been wrapped in banana leaves. The food gets buried and leaf to cook for several hours, to leave the meats succulent and tasty with a slightly smoky flavor. There are two main airports and you can catch direct flights from the US, Australia and New Zealand, and all the South East Asian countries. Everyone else would have to get a connecting flight there first before flying across to Fiji. They travel on the Left hand side of the road, so that might take some getting used to if you are from the states and certain parts of Europe.

The country uses the Fijian Dollar as its local currency; they don’t have any problems with health related issues and the locals are always friendly and helpful to visitors, so if you are looking or a tropical getaway then Fiji is the place to go.
