Visiting Venice In Winter

There are some good practical reasons to take a winter holiday in Venice – hotels offer lower rates this time of the year and the crowds are gone, making it possible to see some of the attractions without waiting in several hour long queues – and many people find Venice to be at its romantic best during the rainy and chilly season. The famed Venetian light takes on a different cast and the City of Canals transforms into a very different place from the hot, smelly, overcrowded Venice of the summer.

Many of the citys most ardent fans avoid the place during the summer. As the poet Joseph Brodsky put it: I would never visit Venice in the summer, not even at gunpoint. And though the periodic floods, the acqua alta, are at their worst in the winter (in fact, as I write this Venice is underwater), some find that St. Marks Square is best viewed during the floods, though you had better bring some waders – and keep in mind that the flood-waters are somewhat polluted, so take care and try not to slosh around in them too much.

The city truly does take on a different character when the tourist hordes are gone and the locals get a chance to reclaim their city. Youll get a much better taste of the authentic local life and the residents are a bit more friendly when the city is quiet. Theres no better time to enjoy eating in one of the citys many trattorias and the lack of queues certainly make the various museums and church tours more worthwhile. Who wants to spend several hours waiting in the summer swelter to get a ten-minute glimpse of St. Marks Basilica?

Although Venice hotels prices can be quite reasonable in general, the winter months see substantial savings on the more luxurious and expensive hotels in Venice. Airfares are also much cheaper in the off-season making a winter trip to Venice a very attractive holiday option. Pack your waders and some warm clothes and book a flight and a room this winter to the famed and beautiful city.
